It seems that if we use other people's photographs, we should reference them just as we would if we were to use their words in a quotation. There are various ways of doing this--I've started putting links to photograph sources at the bottom of my posts.

yup, and it's why I never post pictures I don't take myself. I'm an art historian and hyperactively sensitive to photo rights.
It's interesting how differently people treat words versus images. People I know who would never plagiarize someone else's words readily copy their images without acknowledgement. (I include myself, at least until recently). A surprising double-standard.
good thoughts on that.. i've used photos of others and have wondered myself... giving the link and attribution is the route to go..

I recall the Hindustan Times used to put "courtesy of the internet" under some of its international news stories.
This is something I've been pondering a lot lately - not least because I got a rather terse comment in response to my recent post about Jean Baudrillard's passing.
Typically I link a source page in the post, but I don't typically make it obvious this is the image source (which I probably should). What I'm in two minds about is what to do when the original source of an image is not clear and it appears in multiple locations.
